According to the New Jersey State Bar Association there are more than 80,000 registered NJ attorneys, approximately one attorney for every 1,000 New Jersey residents.
With such an abundance of legal professionals it would appear that finding a lawyer would be easy. However, finding the right lawyer for you isn’t always the simplest task.
The right lawyer is sometime the lawyer whose advice, like a certain medicine, “isn’t to your taste”. Sometimes what you really need to hear is that . . well . . you’re wrong or being wrongheaded. Many people don’t want to hear that, but if you are heading for a cliff or about to drive off one, it often helps to have someone point that out.
Sometimes people have a personal style, from brash and bold to meek or mild and that self-assessment may form a basis for choosing a lawyer. That may or may not work. A blowhard client who chooses a lawyer known for brashness may, in the wrong circumstances, be setting him or herself up for offending or turning off a jury. It’s one thing to “boom at a jury”. It’s quite another for a juror to listen, not just hear. Sometimes a well timed whisper can have people sitting at the edge of their seats.
